KC3 Draft-Oil Spills

How would it be if someone dumped oil all over your house? You wouldn't like it right? So why are ships coming into Hawaii spilling oil on our home. This isn't right, Hawaii is suppose to be a place of paradise not a oil dump!! Hawaii deserves more than this. The people of Hawaii should tell the companies that are spilling oil, to clean it up and make stronger modifications to their ships, to keep the ocean oil free.

Food, materials, products, all the necessities that we need to survive on this island. But what is the point of bringing these materials here if they ships are destroying our islands. Cargo ships are the cause of oil spills. In recent years an 800ft oil ship spilled about 33,600 gallons of oil by Oahu. A 25 year old tanker lost 117,000 gallons of oil from inside and dumped on the Southwest of Oahu. One ship lost 2,200 gallons because of the ships themselves were not capable of holding that much oil.

Marine animals are being affected by this oil spill as well. Mainly the monk seals that are coming to our island to rest. They are being harmed from the ships spilling oil in the ocean. There was an incident when a monk seal was attracted by the frozen food spilled from the sinking ship, and the monk seals accidentally swam into fishing gear and got tangled in. 5,000 gallons of oil was spilled off of Barber's Point, and an abundant of monk seals were affected by it. NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) have 6 highly trained people to prevent wildlife being exposed to man made disasters like oil spills and hazardous materials.

Oahu has one of the most beautiful beaches on the world. And these beaches are being harmed by oil spills. Beaches is what makes Hawaii going so don't destroy it. 30 miles beaches on Oahu have been polluted due to ship oils spills. And not the ocean current on the beaches is spreading, covering up the whole north side of Oahu. Over 6 six beaches have warned people of the dangerous pollution in the ocean. And its not satisfying people. We have to do something about this.

Finally the Ocean oil spills must stop!! and come to an end. The ships that come into Hawaii has to stop and not continue to spill oil in on our island. The companies that bring in our stuff has to do something about their oil spills there losing money and were losing our island, a lose lose situation. Don't just stand there do something about it.

Querencia Draft

5:00am, I get out of my bed yawning and drowsy. I'm looking out of window to see if anyone is awake around me, but I see no sign of anyone. My heart was pumping in shock of thinking no one is awake. As I'm turning around to see what today is, it says "Vacation to Utah". It was totally confusing for me how I forgot about my trip. I couldn't remember anything what I did last night. All I remember was waking up this morning on the floor in my room. This was to weird, for me not remembering what happened last night. As I stumbled across my bags of suitcases, I recalled packing up my things and my mom saying "Don't forget to sleep early". My memories was slowly coming back to me. When I walked more around my room I saw on my dresser, Nyquil. I read the label on the back and it says "Symptoms: drowsy". So that explains my drowsiness. 5:30am, I hear the my car starting "Vrooom Vrooom". I rushed outside to see whats all the commotion about. And I see my uncle loading his bags into the car. So I quickly ran inside the house get my things ready and start loading my things. 6:00am we arrive to the airport. We get through TSA quickly and smoothly with no hold ups.7:00am the plane arrives and we get on the plane. "Woooh" finally were on the plane, now I can rest. 2:00pm Hawaii time, 5:00pm Utah time. 3 hour difference. I finally wake up right next to my mom saying "Are we there yet??", she replied "yes we are". I jumped out of my seat and took a good glimpse outside and I saw the most magnificent piece of land I've ever saw. The mountains was as beautiful as the sun is rising over the horizon. The snow on the mountain is like heaven, across the whole landscape. My vision was astounded, I was nearly speechless. Touchdown!!! I'm finally here in Utah, the first thing I did was take a deep breath, getting the feeling of the cool rush of air through me. At last I can feel and see Utah with my own eyes. We drive to the cabin up all the way into the mountains, I can see deer, different color rocks, and snow falling from the mountains. I knew this was going to be a good vacation. We get to the cabin and we see people playing in the snow, and I asked my mom "can I play with them please??" she said "sure you can but don't get hurt". I ran over to them quickly and introduced my self. "Hello my name is Branden I'm new here and I was wondering if I could play with you guys. They said "yes" and introduced themselves "my name is "Ethan,  this is my little brother Micah and Joshua, and my little sister Haley." They had a nice perky face on there look and well properly dressed for the snow. Ethan and I were the oldest and we got along really fast. Ring Ring Ring, the next day I woke up determined and ready for anything. I walk up the stairs to the kitchen and see eggs, bacon, portuguese sausage, hash browns, pancakes, and waffles. My stomach was craving for food. I couldn' wait until my mom said "time to eat" so I took a sneak peek and took a bite of the waffles and pancakes. They were so yummy, I hear my mom and my uncle walking up the stairs and I quickly stopped eating. They were looking at me suspiciously but I tried to cover it up with some words "What are we doing today?" she replied "were going snowboarding. I said "really?!?!" I was full of excitement and joy. As I looked outside I couldn't imagine my eyes. The mountain was like 100,000ft!!!! my heart was thumping rapidly, I thought I was going to pass out. But I said to myself "come on you can do this!!" and with the encouragement of my mom and my uncle, I can conquer this mountain.

Roots and Recipes: Food Choice Draft

Since the beginning of my family second generation we have been making many types of different food in our culture. But the only food that stands out in my family is the Aroscaldo or in Hawaii its Jook. Aroscaldo has been in my family ever since my grandma came to the United States. Every New Year my grandma would always make Aroscaldo because its a family tradition. Filipino's superstition is whatever you do in the first hour of the New Year it will dictate how you will act the rest of the year. For example if you spend money in the first hour of the New Year, you will spend money for the rest of the year. What is also believed in my culture is rice is very important because it symbolizes good health, strength, and you wont go hungry.

Aroscaldo is made up of mostly rice and chicken. We all know that rice is a very well eaten starch. And chicken is a most favorable food to eat. And when you mix both of them together you get the most tastiest, flavorful aroma, and a delightful sense of texture.

This dish has been in my family for over three generations. This dish has very been scared to make since the first generation because my great grandma was poor and scrutiny about money. And chicken was expensive back then to my family because we just moved here to America from the Philippines. So every year they would try to buy chicken just to fulfill the tradition.

To make the Aroscaldo the ingredients you need is boneless chicken, ginger, salt and pepper, patis sauce, chicken broth, raw rice, and green onions. First thing you do is to saute the chicken with ginger and pepper. Then when your chicken is brown put your patis on it. After you cook the chicken broth put in the rice but don't forget to wash it. And let it cook for 20min... then when you see the rice cooked that means its done. Then after that you can garnish the food with green onion.

All in all my family has made Arosclado for over three generations and it has been great ever since. Just every year my I go over my grandmas house I know that there's always something there to eat

Roots and Recipes: Food Choice

Since the beginning of my life my family tradition has always been part of me. Every new year I would go over my grandmas house to celebrate and cook aroscaldo. And once I open the front door the burning pans and hot steams screaming form the kitchen, meant it was gonna be a good year. Once you've enter the kitchen my taste buds would go crazy because of the delight aroma I would smell. My culture believes that every new year when you eat rice it would bring good health and strength to you. So you can have a good life.
